SPA TIPS FOR LIVING WELL
Can eating strawberries with whipped cream be bad for you? Colleen Fraser, director of training and education at Vida Wellness Spa in Vancouver offers a few basic concepts from an Ayurvedic food combining program.
Regarded as one of the oldest complete systems of healing knowledge in the world, Ayurveda originated in India some 5,000 years ago. It’s a life science with complete balance and maximum state of health as the goal.
Proper food combining is a perspective that Ayurveda advocates follow to gain optimal digestion, assimilation and absorption of the nutrients. Signs of improper food combining can include indigestion, fermentation, gas, bloating, abdominal cramping, fatigue and, if prolonged, improper food combining can lead to toxemia and disease. Colleen Fraser offers a few tips to get you going:
• Avoid eating fruits with dairy (i.e. strawberries with whipped cream, bananas with milk). Fruit digests easily and quickly through our body but when you combine fruit and dairy together, the two curdle in the gut. One food (fruit) wants to travels fast through the digestion, while the other food group (dairy) moves slow, hence fermentation. All fruits should be eaten as a ‘fruit meal’ ...alone.
• Avoid eating melons and grains together. Melons digest quickly and grains take more time. This combo of foods will upset the stomach. Melons should be eaten alone or left alone.
• Honey should never be cooked. According to ancient Ayurvedic literature, honey should never be cooked because, if cooked, the molecules become a non-homogenized glue that adheres to mucous membranes and clogs subtle channels, producing toxins. Uncooked honey is nectar. Cooked honey is considered poison.
TIPS TO AID DIGESTION
• Eat 1/2 tsp freshly grated ginger with a pinch of rock salt before each meal.
• Dark, green leafy vegetables help digestion and regulate metabolism
• Small sips of warm water during a meal will aid digestion and absorption of food.
• Do not drink iced water as it is too shocking to the system and slows down digestion.
Be well, travel safe.
