Eight Ways to Maintain an EXERCISE ROUTINE While Travelling September 1, 2009
Even the most dedicated exercise buff may be challenged when it comes to working out while on the road. When you’re away from the comfort of your own home and regular workout routine, it can be tough to keep with it. Here we look at some helpful ways to be sure that you keep on track with your exercise efforts.
• Get Creative: You need to do your part to get creative and come up with ways of working out even if you don’t have the amenities. Learn to incorporate exercise into your day, even in the simplest ways. If you are truly committed to your workout routine, look for ways in any location in which you can burn calories and get in some cardio even if it’s just taking a long walk.
• Keep a Routine: If you are one who works out in the morning, then be sure to schedule time for this with your travels. If you hit the gym before you go to sleep at night then keep with this. Any normalcy that you can pencil in surrounding your workout routine is a surefire way to keep you on track. If you break routine, that’s when it can become detrimental and less likely to stick with for the long haul.
• Use Your Amenities: If you are staying in a hotel that has a gym or even a pool, then use whatever you have at your disposal to get your workout in. Ask around to see if there’s a local gym for which you can get a day pass for if all else fails. If you’re at somebody’s house then get out for a morning walk or run—anything to keep the blood flowing and the calories burning.
• Exercise In Your Room: Don’t underestimate just how many calories you can burn by doing some exercise activities in the comfort of your own room. Walk or jog in place, create your own routine with pushups, sit ups, and even squats and lunges. If you’re truly dedicated, you can always find a way to get in some level of a workout.
• Take the Extra Steps: If you’re at an airport, take a longer route to get to your gate or go for a long walk as you wait for your plane to board. If you’re at a convention center, take in a bit of extra time to walk the halls and burn off some calories. Take the stairs whenever necessary and by all means, park as far from the entrance as possible at any given destination.
• Pack Your Must Have Item: Pack any items that can travel with you to ensure you get in some form of exercise. Pack a pedometer, some hand weights, or even a deflated exercise ball to ensure that you are doing your part to stay on track. This will keep you motivated and remind you of the comfort of your own workout at home.
• Find a Partner in Crime: If traveling for business, see if a co-worker will work out with you. If going on a trip for fun, then see if you can get your spouse or friend to hit the gym with you. Having a partner in crime, whenever possible, is a great way to get in your workout and be sure that you stay on track even when you are away from home.
• Take in the Sights: If you are in a place that has some interesting things to see, use this as an excuse to get out for a nice long walk. Rather than using public transportation, take a walk to get there. Do whatever you can to enjoy the local sights and work in some form of exercise along the way as well. Take a running tour
