MY WELLNESS VACATION IS.. June 17, 2010

There are all kinds of vacations. The 21-cities-in-14-days vacation. The it-rained-every-day-at-the-cottage-with-5-kids-under-the-age-of-12 vacation. There’s the romantic-weekend-that-blew-your-relationship-apart, and the girls’-getaway-that-you-couldn’t-wait-to-get-away-from.

Been there. Done those. Those are what my wellness vacation is not.

Wellness, in my experience, has to do with a sense of health, wholeness, and even, holiness. Those words are all connected in the English language; they are certainly connected in the language of my life. A wellness vacation takes me away to a place that offers nourishing food, whether that is a juice fast or gourmet cuisine; an environment that I can both relax and re-energize in, whether it be Spartan or luxurious; and surroundings, activities and people that inspire me, that fill my own well of creativity, and that help me integrate the fragmented parts of my stressed-out being and connect with a sense of trust and renewal of purpose.

A wellness vacation creates magic, re-confirming my faith that I am part of something big, profound and beautiful, that the seemingly insurmountable problems of my life are tiny and laughable, and that I am re-weaving myself back into the fabric of the Universe, which is Love.

Does that seem like an awful lot to expect from a vacation? Well, I’ve had it. I’ve had it in an inn on the ocean in Maine and in a tent in the Finger Lakes; on a mountain top in Crete, a desert in the Middle East, and a small hotel and studio in Portland, Oregon. There was that arts and culture weekend in Manhattan, and the high-end resort in Puerto Rico, years ago with my parents. And, that moment at Stonehenge when the whole rainy month in the British Isles – dreary emotionally as well as in weather – suddenly came into a startling new focus. Those perfect moments - those healing, whole, holy times-out-of-times – do exist. They can happen anywhere, and everywhere. They renew, re-integrate and recharge the body, mind and spirit.

It’s nice, though, when the vacation destination is imagined, designed and created to support this integrative process. There are so many lovely healing sanctuaries around the world now, and it is so much easier to travel to them than in the old days. An escape of a week, or even a weekend, with the purpose of tending to one’s wellness, is a possibility across all price ranges. And with the perilous state of the world and our lives today, it is more than ever necessary.

MY WELLNESS VACATION IS.. August 12, 2010

I had a car accident five years ago, and the first three years I basically sat on my couch in pain and agony. I refused meds because I was more afraid of getting addicted to pain killers then learning to live with the pain.

It has been the last six months that I started to become mobile and enthusiastic about life again - I started a detox program and started taking various supplements to deal with my fibromyalgia.

I have heard of Grail Springs and want to visit for a full detox program. Especially now since I now first-hand realize the importance of what we eat, and how we live.

I would love to engage in the opportunity of spending an entire week focusing on my well being. As a mother of four and a grandmother I so realize how vital it is to take time for the self - in order to be more for others.

I believe in the power of human connection.

The idea of eating organic foods, juices and detoxing in a serene environment plus making the time to care for the body, mind and soul is what a Wellness Vacation means to me.
