Secrets Resort & Spa Huatulco continued....

Previous page
The initial impression of the new Secrets Huatulco Resort & Spa is upscale and international - lots of marble, glass and chrome- sleek and ultra modern but a little lacking in warmth and sense of place.  The addition of greenery, more floral arrangements and wall art would definately help create a warmer, more welcoming feel.

While the resort caters primarily to the corporate market, wedding and honeymooners and couples, in general, there is also enough here for the wellness-minded.  The zen feel of the property, the proximity to the ocean and the sophisticated, first class Secrets Spa by Pevonia with its European-style water circuit and inspiring views are a few of the features we most liked. There is also daily yoga, stretch classes and kayaking options.

The spa complex includes a well-equiped gym, a small salon, 10 sun-lit Treatment Cabins and a full menu of services. Prices are slightly higher than one would expect in Mexico, but are comparable to those at spa resorts in the U.S. and Canada.  A 50-minute massage starts at $129 U.S.  The only nod to the Mexican culture is the tamazcal where a sweat lodge ritual is conducted twice a month by a Mexican shaman. Even if you are not a resort guest, you can still book a treatment or service which allows you to use the spa facilities including the swimming pool and water circuit.

When it comes to food - there is no designated "healthy" restuarant so it will be left up to the individual guest to make those healthy food choices from any one of the seven restaurants on the property. Unfortunately,  I didn't have the opportunity to sample the food but the restaurant spaces themselved looked lovely and, like the resort itself, upscale and contemporary.

There are a number of swimming pool and lots of seating areas but I felt the resort sadly lacks sufficient shade areas.  There were not enough umbrellas and shaded spaces around the pool and on the beach to escape the relentless Mexican sun.  It could be due to the fact that the resort is still relatively new.  Watch the slide show
