TORONTO'S OASIS WELLNESS CENTRE & SPA CLOSED ON MARCH 9

We are sad to report that the Oasis Spa which opened in the spring of 2007 in downtown Toronto has closed its doors.

Owner Peter Smed of Calgary tells us, “we are saddened by the closure of Oasis Toronto. We were proud of what we accomplished and regret that employees and customers were affected by the closure.” Fortunately, customers who purchased the unlimited 1-year pass, he says, were able to take advantage of the spa for the 11 months that it was open.

He explains that financial reasons were behind the decision. It was taking too long to draw traffic to the city’s historic Distillery District and sales were not where they should have been to keep the business viable and productive. “We worked right to the 11th hour to negotiate a deal but were unsuccessful,” he said.

Looking at this as a learning experience, Smed admits they may have been overly optimistic about the draw of the location and the willingness of Torontonians to make the journey to the Distillery. “The district,” he says, “is not yet a community and it is very important if not essential to locate a new spa where there is an established community – where a mix of people congregate.”

The Oasis Spa in Calgary, celebrating its 10-year anniversary, will continue to operate.
