For freshly-whipped smoothies, fozen yogurt and energy drinks try Freshens located in Terminal T Boarding Gate 3 right next to Starbucks.

The new Dining Terrace at Boston Logan’s International Airport was unveiled last month (September '08) in Terminal C and features fast, yet healthy options for travelers such as fresh burritos and smoothies from Curritos Burritos Without Borders, sushi from Ryo Asian Fusion and hearty salads from Jerry Remy’s Sports Bar & Grill (full service eat-in restaurant). The layout of the food lounge is designed so that food is prepared fresh and in front of diners, as opposed to frozen and behind the scenes.

I wanted to pass along some info about a Boston-based client of mine — UFood Grill — and their Logan Airport location (located in Terminal B, serving American Airline customers. UFood Grill is all about making healthy dining choices without sacrificing taste – the menu consists of many (believe it or not) better-for-you items such as Burgers, Signature Sandwiches, UBowls™, Wraps, Grilled Entrees, Specialty Salads, Chili, Sides, Smoothies™, and High Protein Prolattas™. Every dish is baked, grilled or steamed. Nothing in the restaurant is fried. And because healthy means different things to different people, guests are encouraged to customize their meals to their tastes.

Airport Restaurants: Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport

Planned for December 2008 and the first quarter of 2009, four new healthy food concepts are being introduced in Terminals B and C:

UFood Grill (at Terminal B, Gate 8) will offer tasty, exciting and fresh menu items include breakfast burritos, grilled entrees with lean meats, baked Airfries™, streamed vegetables and whole grain items. Highly detailed nutritional facts in a user-friendly format will be accessible for each menu item via brochures and digital menu panels.

Cereality/Blimpie (Terminal C, Gate 6) will offer an array of whole grain and organic hot/cold cereal choices and fresh fruit toppings along with low fat and soy milk options. Blimpies, which also has nutritional offerings with fresh salads and sandwiches, will be co-branded with Cereality in one of the locations.

Urban Taco (Terminal C, Gate 22) an upscale urban taqueria, serving “best-in-class” products, including artisan “homemade” tacos, breakfast omelettes and rice bowls. Offerings are light and nutritious, with high fiber complex carbohydrates, fresh ingredients and flavorful spices. All menu items are fast turnaround production of 1-2 minutes for fast-paced dining so important in an airport setting.

As a former flight attendant and now travel writer I have spent my share of time in airports. While many airports offer the traditional chain options my favorite "things to do" in an airport is seek out local food options, for example, the Detroit airport has Mediterranean options (Mediterranean Grill – Middle Eastern Cuisine is in McNamera Terminal)

Airport Restaurants: Miami International Airport

When I travel I really appreciate airports that have an Au Bon Pain. Their smaller portions with calorie notations are perfect for “on the go” take out choices. Also, perfect for when you’re hopping on a flight that doesn’t include meals.

Airport Restaurants: Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport

I don't travel a TON, but my all time favorite is the French Meadow Cafe in the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport. They make hemp bread, gluten free bread and all kinds of amazing breakfast foods. It still blows my mind that they have a restaurant at the airport -- their "regular" restaurant is always packed. I hear people comment about it all the time, how great it is! I'd add it to your list, for sure!

Airport Restaurants: Newark Liberty Airport

Not much in the line of restaurants at Terminal A - Gates 20-27 but you'll find a kiosk called Grove with fresh fruit, granola bars and bins of nuts (including roasted almonds) and dried fruit so you can mix-your-own. There's also a Starbucks.

Airport Restaurants: John F. Kennedy International, New York

I cover the business of airports, including food concessions. Every year, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine puts out a report on the airports with the healthiest food. You can see the 2007 report here.

Also, one of my favorite healthy food concept at JFK is Cibo Express which offers low fat, vegetarian and vegan selections, among others.

Airport Restaurants: Philadelphia International Airport

I represent the food and shops at Philadelphia International Airport and have a few examples of healthy food options there. PHL also offers a “take out for takeoff” option so travelers can bring food on the plane with them from the airport restaurants.

• Cibo Bistro and Wine Bar: Salads, seafood, Italian specialties
Cibo Express: Fruit, hummus, veggies, wraps, fresh salads, sandwiches and more
Salad Works: Made to order salads with a variety of fresh ingredients, offers light dressings
TGI Friday's: “Lighter side” menu includes low-carb and low-fat items; smaller portion menu also available

Airport Restaurants: Pittsburg International Airport

I am a Registered Dietitian always looking for healthier eating options at airports because that’s the way that I eat. In the Pittsburgh airport there are a good number of choices – a Mexican place that will make a burrito or salad bowl with the ingredients that you choose. I can’t remember the name.

Airport Restaurants: Portland International Airport

I travel a lot and the lack of healthy food is always an issue but Portland International Airport houses one great restaurant with delicious and healthy food: Riverfront Café. It serves sandwiches and salad, all with fresh ingredients. There are low-fat options and even icons on the menu to indicate the healthiest options.

I'm an ultra healthy eater and traveling is tough for me. Here are some exceptions I've found:

Caper's Café (All food is made to order and can be taken to go)
• Egg scrambles with steamed vegetables and sliced turkey
• Brown rice sushi
• Turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread
• An assortment of fresh fruit

Airport Restaurants: San Francisco International Airport

Yankee Pier
is a New England style seafood restaurant located in the post-security United Airlines terminal at SFO and offers fresh fish that is flown in daily or caught locally, farm-to-table seasonal ingredients and a comfortable atmosphere in which to enjoy a meal before a flight. The restaurant is part of the Bay Area-based Lark Creek Restaurant Group, which has a seasonal, farmer’s market approach to all their restaurants. Just a few months ago, they also adopted the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch guidelines company-wide, so they only use sustainably-raised and caught fish in all of their restaurants. Everything is made fresh in-house, the only exception being the bread, which they source from a local bakery.

Menu includes fresh fish selections from local Petrale Sole to Artic Char that can be prepared grilled or sauteed. Each main course comes with a variety of side dish options, so people looking to watch their weight can easily make healthy eating decisions.

Airport Restaurants: Sacramento International Airport

One of my hands down favorites at SMF is California Pizza Kitchen with salads packaged for on board dining.

Also, Vino Volo (Italian for wine flight) is the first upscale airport wine bar that’s on its way to becoming a chain. Vino Volo operates in airports in Baltimore, Seattle and Sacramento, and at JFK and Dulles international airports. Plans are afoot to open Vino Volos in Philadelphia and Detroit by summer. Its tasty, small plates include artisanal cheeses and duck confit.
