can physical activity help fight preventable diseases?

Can physical activity help thwart cancer, diabetes, mental illness and heart disease?  In the fall of 2011, based on mounting evidence, the United Nations answered a resounding yes. They called fighting non-communicable diseases (such as cancer, diabetes, mental illness and heart disease) one of the major challenges of the 21st century and pointed to exercise as an integral part of the solution. 

In December, The University of Toronto’s Faculty of Physical Education and Health hosted an expert panel of speakers who painted a picture of where Canadians are today and how exercise plays a key role in preventing such diseases.
