The Beach Club, South Carolina introduces programs to help kids and teens detox from digital devices

Parents beginning to plan this summer’s family vacation will be pleased to know that the newly-opened Beach Club at Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina Beach Club in Charleston, South Carolina is offering a robust summer program to keep kids and teens entertained while helping keep digital devices at bay.

Supervised and guided activities – both on site and off - include programs such as the Sunset Celebration – an evening activity of roasting marshmallows at the beachfront fire pit, followed by making a wish upon a shell and tossing it into the ocean. Studies show that rituals such as this one are calming to children, provide a focal point from distraction and teach them to live in the moment.  10 wellness things to do in Charleston

The Mini-Mariners Kids’ Camp – open Monday to Friday mornings for kids ages 5-12 - encourages children to step away from technology and engage in the environment around them by making weather instruments, interacting with ocean life, hunting for shark teeth, painting, fossil digging and making piñatas.  Cost is $40 per day or $185 per week and lunch is included.

A variety of special themed weeks, include Arts in Nature, Everyday Super Heroes, Outdoor Detectives, Weather Watches, Dinosaur Days and others, mean there is something for a wide range of interests.  These themed weeks also include unique field trips such as one to a local police department, another to a local weather station. According to the news release, these experiential types of digital detox programs are “becoming more important to parents as the younger generations become more connected to and dependent on their devices.”

Teenagers will find plenty of opportunities for exploration by complimentary bicycle, hitting a nature trail test their balance on a Stand Up Paddleboard. Ping Pong tables, beach volleyball, ladder golf and horseshoes and a giant outdoor chess set are accessible for teens. Sailing lessons and private fishing excursions can be arranged through the Marina.

Another bonus for families is the availability of Family Parlor Rooms which have a separate closed door bedroom with two twin beds for the kids, allowing private time for mom and dad. A member of Leading Hotels of the World, The Beach Club at Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina is located minutes from Charleston’s historic district and was named one of Fodor’s Best New Hotels in the World in 2016.
